New Hampshire's Coastal Sediment Budget Deficits New Hampshire possesses 18 miles of Atlantic shoreline, the shortest ocean frontage of any coastal state. The New Hampshire Coastal Program measures average annual beach loss of 2.1 feet along Hampton and Seabrook segments, driven by reduced sediment supply after the 1940s construction of the Hampton Harbor jetties. Mean high-water lines have retreated 85 feet since 1950 in the most exposed cells.
Nonprofit organizations must pair awareness materials with engineered sand fencing or cobble placement plans that reference the state's 2021 sediment management study. Proposals limited to signage without physical interventions score lower. Applicants must obtain permits from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services wetlands bureau before any material placement below the highest observable tide line.
Projects require partnership letters from at least one of the four coastal municipalities and from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department confirming that restoration sites fall outside piping plover nesting buffers. Quarterly reports must include LiDAR-derived volume change calculations for treated reaches.
New Hampshire reviewers distinguish applications from Maine submissions by requiring explicit accounting of the state's tidal datum differences and the absence of large riverine sediment inputs south of the Piscataqua River.
