New Hampshire's diagnostic capacity for frontotemporal dementia is split between Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and a smaller neurology group in Manchester. Investigators developing novel imaging or biofluid assays must therefore secure scanner time on both 3T and 7T systems, because Dartmouth maintains the state's only 7T magnet while Manchester offers easier access for southern residents.
Rural-urban differences manifest in transportation requirements: participants living north of the White Mountains face a minimum three-hour drive to either site. Proposals must budget for mileage reimbursement at the state employee rate plus overnight lodging when weather on I-93 closes passes. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation publishes seasonal closure statistics that reviewers expect to see referenced in timeline justifications.
Eligibility further requires that the lead institution maintain an active New Hampshire institutional review board authorization, even when Dartmouth serves as the primary performance site. State privacy regulations treat genetic and biofluid data as protected health information subject to additional consent steps not required under federal rules alone. Applications that omit the state-specific consent addendum are administratively declined.
Unlike Massachusetts programs, New Hampshire submissions must demonstrate that at least 30 percent of enrolled participants reside outside the two largest metropolitan statistical areas. This distribution requirement prevents investigators from defaulting to Boston-area recruitment networks that cross state lines but do not reflect New Hampshire's actual population dispersion.
